The dedicated creation of hundreds of heart sculptures to be smashed and broken was a vital aspect of the project. The long process of slush molding (where the artist shakes liquid plaster within a mold until it hardens) was continued for months. The time spent by the artist was meant to be a real physical world consequence pertaining to user actions.
A 3D model of the heart was sculpted digitally in Maya software and rigged for skeletal animation. Various animation tests of different heart looks, physics, and motion styles were created in order to prepare for augmentation.
Dozens of podium and display styles were tested trying to find the perfect combination that would both fit with the meaning behind the project and work with the visual recognition software to trigger the visual animations.
Using the Unity Game Engine augmented animations were created that could be accessed via phone, only if a special code was entered which was obtained through smashing one of the heart sculptures, but each smashed sculpture meant one more that would never be seen again
